What do CLG's Pros think of Taric's Rework?

Taric has been a champion that's been down in the dumpster in the past couple years so to speak. He was the king of burst and targeted crowd control in the early days of League of Legends, but eventually became obsolete as new supports had the tools and utility that Taric could only dream of. Even when explosive burst bot lanes came back into the meta, it was Annie that took the spotlight. There's a long list of champions that were just plain better than Taric: Thresh, Braum, Bard, Tahm Kench, Lulu, and all the other champions that were never meant to be supports that became supports.

We initially sat down with Aphromoo and Stixxay to get their opinions on the new rework, but brought along Darshan because it was clear to the CLG duo that top lane Taric was a possibility.

Q: Starlight's Touch

Taric heals himself and all nearby allies based on the number of Starlight's Touch charges he’s stored. Taric generates up to three charges over time.

Aphromoo:
Pretty good. It's an AoE heal, similar to Sona but Sona only targets two people. Taric's heal is probably really really busted. You can heal everyone around you, he's a melee support so obviously he's going to be in the fray.

Stixxay:
It seems pretty good.

Darshan:
I think his heal is pretty unique, it's one of the only aoe heals in the game. It's pretty cool especially in combination with Bastion.

W: Bastion

All of Taric’s abilities are simultaneously cast from both Taric and his linked ally. The passive increases Taric's Armor. The active allows Taric to link with an ally, shielding them from damage.

Aphromoo:
Gives him passive armor like double shatter, and it's basically Kalista bind but for the whole game, you can just keep rebinding. It's actually ridiculous.

Stixxay:
Wait really, it works with his ult? I understand double stun, you can actually double ult? That's so dumb.

Aphromoo:
Comes out of the person man. So you can get the whole team, frontline and the backline, boom.

Darshan:
This was the thing I looked forward to the most when I first heard about Taric's rework!

E: Dazzle

After a brief delay, Taric fires out a short wave of celestial energy in a target direction that stuns all enemies struck.

Aphromoo:
The new dazzle is ridiculous. You can just run around and it channels while you're moving. So you just have to point it at the target and then just start running at them.

Stixxay:
So it just goes with you? What the... that's broken.

Darshan:
I like how it's a line targeted stun and not just targeted anymore.

R: Cosmic Radiance

Taric calls on the stars themselves for protection. After a moderate delay, he and all nearby allies become invulnerable for a few seconds.

Aphromoo:
It's broken dude.

Stixxay:
That's broken. [Laughs] It's so broken.

Aphromoo:
You can jump in for the baron steal and say what's up baby?

Stixxay:
It's pretty dumb.

Darshan:
Pretty interesting, I like abilities that will be game changing and I can see how this ult will completely turn around a teamfight.

Laning + Teamfighting

The players haven't had a chance to play the reworked Taric yet, but the CLG botlane duo were skeptical of Taric's ability to lane. "His laning phase as support seems hard," Aphromoo remarked. "Hard to tell until I kow his base damage or whatever, he can all in, but he only has one damage ability and then everything else is his heals and shields." They both agreed that he might do pretty well in the top lane though. "I think he's going to be a top laner man," Aphromoo continued. "Yeah a tank top laner. I don't know if you can actually kill that guy..."

CLG's resident top laner Darshan thought about it, but funnily enough didn't seem as sure as his teammates on Taric's solo laning ability. "I think his solo laning will be pretty good just by going the typical top tank build starting with Frozen Gauntlet," Darshan stated, but went on to talk about his reservations. "He might have trouble with ranged top laners though. Depending on how reliably he can land his line stun on opponents, it might be ok. I'll have to play him to find out."

All three players were in agreement about the new Taric's teamfighting ability however: broken.

"That's where he's broken," Stixxay stated.

"Pretty good... Broken. He just has a lot of utility," said Aphromoo. "It's like Karma if you play well, you'll do pretty well."

"I think just from his ultimate and AoE heals and stuns he'll be great in teamfights," agreed Darshan.

Overall Impressions:

"Hell no," replied Aphromoo in response to whether he liked the new Taric. "Every support rework is just busted. You go to top lane and come up with Tahm Kench."

The players were fairly impressed with Taric's utility and power, but it didn't necessarily mean they actually liked the rework. Both Aphromoo and Stixxay think that Taric's introduction to the rift will be similar to Lulu and Tahm Kench - meant for support, but better off in a solo lane.

Taric will be released soon enough. Find out for yourself whether the players were right when he makes his new debut on the Rift!
