Finales Funkeln sounds cooler than Infinite Light.

Infinite Light sounds like some made up attack you use as a kid pretending to be a super hero.

So there's only a few possible actual causes here:

    * I liked the old name because it's a really appropriate and great name.

This would be a good reason to not change a name. However, considering no one can say it (phonetically it doesn't tend to work) and the etymology is something I'd guess even proponents would have to look up, there's few objective reasons I can imagine where this is true.

    * I liked the old name because I disapprove of the new one.

This doesn't mean it should be changed back (for the above points) but instead it's important we try to choose appropriate names when either creating or changing. It seems the outcry here is largely that this name sounds "too cool" for Lux, who is a softer-style character (though to this, Prismatic Barrier and Lucent Singularity are pretty "epic fantasy" names as well).

    * You changed something, so I don't like it. I want things I'm used to.

This is something I'm not terribly sympathetic to, and in this case something I think is driving a large part of this conversation. Change and adjustment in any direction is hard, and especially when it's a surprising change.

Just to make sure I get a lot of downvotes, I think this is making a mountain out of a molehill. Maybe we can do better in wrapping theme changes into a smarter package from now on, or give more context up-front, but no one has made a single good argument of why the old name was a good name. This is why I think the last reason is the most likely culprit.

I'm also not going to spend much time on this subject because it's not my wheelhouse (and frankly, there are more important things for me to deal with from a gameplay perspective) but I thought I'd come try to pop the lid off this.

It's part of some lore rebooting and thematic consistency stuff coming up, but since this was done ahead of that, I have a feeling it made it a bit more "WTF". Some of the Creative dudes have hinted at this a bit.

It is actually the complete opposite. There are a few who have come to the threads saying that they like Infinite Light, but the vast majority of people that are speaking out about this either say they want the name changed back or they want a better replacement. Many people find the name to be extremely bland and witless. I personally don't find anything "cool" about the name. Infinite is even used by another champ in the form of Infinite Duress.

I gave up on the changing back side of the argument quite a while ago as Riot has made many decent points for changing it in the first place. I don't agree with the points made in some cases, but at least there was thought put in to them. On the other hand I am incredibly disappointed in the new name that was chosen. Many other players are as well. Some like it, but many don't.

Given the opportunity to change an ability's name should have been a goldmine of an opportunity for some creative input to tie in some lore to the ability. Even a simple tip of the hat to Demacia and her brother Garen would be a decent move in the form of Demacian _____ (insert your own inspired noun). Lux has one of the coolest looking ultimates that is instantly recognizable upon casting and the name Infinite Light does it no justice.

I've probably spent too much time typing this and lost you, but hopefully you get a chance to read this.

    Thanks again for stopping by!

Edit: Why choose this thread as a vehicle for your response?
I just got "back" to the forums and saw this first. You guys can share information as you see fit though!

This is the real discussion to have here, and a good indicator of how we should do better when changing things. "Infinite Light is lacking something..." or "Doesn't feel like Lux - I'm not sure why even" are good things to hear. Valuable feedback in that, especially on how to do this as the lore changes become more real.

My favorite missed-opportunities on names are:

Aviator Irelia - how did we not call this Irelia Earhart?!

Crowstorm - Murder of Crows is actually what a group of crows is called. And it murders you! D:

    Then what's the reason I didn't list that's unrepresented?

    EDIT: Seeing the above post.

"Doesn't fit Lux" is reason number 2 in a nutshell.

No, it's ****ing frank and honest. Disagree all you want, I'm going to come tell you what I think about things, and try to explain them. I also have a good idea of if it will be a popular statement or not.

The point is I'd rather say something unpopular than not say something. From what I've always gathered, our fans prefer that too. When I do though, don't call me out for saying it - disagree with the content.

Just because a few (or even a majority of players) don't get the reference or the meaning doesn't mean that there are not players who want to know what it meant.

I am sad to hear you guys will no longer be taking that route in your lore, and this is the start of it as you said. That's my reasoning. It was a way to learn some new, maybe useless stuff. I used to love the new champ lore, and releases because I could not wait to see what I would be looking up next for understanding, now I don't even read the new lore :/
Being a Touhou reference with legs shouldn't be a whole character. She's Garen's sister and a light mage in Demacia. She's cheerful, positive and a breath of fresh air from the seriousness that surrounds her brother and comrades.

I get that Infinite Light wasn't maybe the best choice - but Lux should be her own character with her own references. A better example is True Grit - it's not only representative of Graves' personality, but also a nod to the movie of the same name and the character archetype that Jeff Bridges plays. When you do references, they need to work well even if you do not know the reference.

np, I misunderstood. My apologies there.

No, because True Grit is a good name for the ability that fits the character even if that movie were never made. That's the difference.

The referential parts of Lux's ult are not sensible without the reference.

First let me point some why Infinite Ligth is not a good name for her ult:

    1. If her ult was global, then, i would said it fit, guess what it is not global, the term infinite mean no ending, her ult has a max ranged, so with that said that name is a complete lie.

    2. Infinite Ligth it a weak name.Cmon guys, you did some really awesome champion, Zyra, you guys are making great lore now, i liked the new lore for Fiora and Shyvana, and amazing skin are made, like Cho new skin, so creativity you guys have alot.Infinite Ligth is the less creativity name for Lux ult you guys made, and i know you guys can do better.

Now let me put some ideia for a better name for Lux ult that would fit really good.

    1. I call first the use of the translation of Finales Funkle, that is Final Spark or Final Sparkel, it would fit, but you guys could argue that the name Spark or Sparkel if more related to electricity so that to you guys.

    2. A good name could be Final Ligth, why, because the reason that people use Lux ult its to kill in one shot the enemy, and that fit perfect, just let me said one final thing, i would love for this ult be called Final Flash but you guys could have problem with Copyrigth with DBZ so i am not gonna ask for that name.

    3. A name that come to my head just rigth now is Ultimate Ligth. With this name you have the confirmation that it is a ultimate, and it is Lux best weapon for damage, give power to the ult.

So that is Morello, what you think?
I think this could be a good approach - I like this type of discussion where we can exchange ideas.

I'm just here talking since you guys want someone to talk to about it - this decision is not in my hands, so I can't talk much about that.
